Penetrating the Market

I realize we are in the 21st century.

However.

When I see a woman driving a public transit bus, or a streetcar, or a subway, I feel oodles of pride. Maybe it's because women are always being chastized for being bad drivers...or maybe it's because it used to be a male-dominated profession. Or maybe it impresses me that they can handle a large vehicle like that....

Either way, when I step onto a bus and see a lady at the wheel, I want to high-five her.

I'd say there are probably about 25-30% female transit drivers in Toronto. I have only encountered a handful of horrible drivers, and they are always the men. They brake suddenly, or they pump the accelerator incessantly. There is just no need for that. Just keep your foot on the pedal...and keep it halfway down. When people are standing, they are struggling to stay vertical because they are constantly swaying from side to side. Bus surfing, one could say.

I also love to see women at the wheel of a fire truck. Nothing says equality like a woman at the wheel, with the men sitting in the cab behind her. Wicked.

Below is a picture of my friend Andrea, a female firefighter, in Markham. She is pretending to smoke a cigarette, in case you were wondering. Inside joke. She is also a Captain, so she gets to boss around all the men. Again. Wicked.

Anyhooo, way to go women!

Way to go.

I want to know the inside joke. Is it funny?

I was told I must leave a comment. It's too bad that we (women) are still shocked when we see other women holding certain positions out in the world. It startles me because I wonder if we are still stunned everytime, what are all the men thinking? Men thinking, isn't that an oxymoron? It only confirms that we have been taught that it is wrong or different. When will these archaic thoughts go away. After 17 years, I think I have proven myself and that's all it should take to change the old theories. Now, go away.
